Abstract

For more than two decades, Colombia’s acquiring market was dominated by a duopoly (Redeban and Credibanco) resulting in high costs, slow innovation, and persistent dependence on cash. The introduction of Bre-B, an interoperable payment rail developed by the Central Bank, represents a structural shift with the potential to democratize access, reduce fees, and accelerate financial inclusion. This opinion article analyzes the transition from a closed system to an open, competitive environment, examines future risks related to governance, taxation, and political capture, and draws key lessons from Brazil’s Pix. Colombia now faces a pivotal moment: whether Bre-B becomes a catalyst for national modernization or another missed opportunity.
