Abstract

This article analyzes Kundera's (1984) novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being through the concept of ontological lightness and its expression in the romantic relationships of its characters. It argues that this lightness, grounded in the irreversibility of time, is not equivalent to superficiality but to an existential stance that is not equally available to all those who love. Drawing on Nietzsche (2001, 2006), Kierkegaard (2006), Sartre (2006), De Beauvoir (1999, 2017), and Bauman (2005), the article examines how the tension between loving lightly and loving with weight runs through the novel's characters and, more critically, how that tension is asymmetrical in gendered terms. It proposes reading Kundera in dialogue with De Beauvoir's narrative and theoretical work to make visible what the novel documents but does not always name. It concludes that this asymmetry is not incidental but structural.
