Chancay economic impact for Perú and Colombia: A prospective look.

Abstract

The Chancay Megaport, located north of Lima and financed by the Chinese company COSCO Shipping Ports, represents a key transformation in trade connectivity between Latin America and Asia. This study analyzes its potential economic impact on Peru and Colombia from a prospective perspective, highlighting its role as a strategic logistics hub for MSMEs and its connection with treaties such as the Andean Community (CAN), the Pacific Alliance, and the CAN-EU FTA. The port is projected to increase Peruvian GDP by up to 1%, boost productive diversification in areas such as Chancay, and reduce logistics costs to Colombia by up to 30%. It also identifies that MSMEs from both countries could more easily integrate into international value chains, provided complementary support policies are in place. The Peruvian experience serves as a benchmark for similar processes in Colombian port regions, such as Buenaventura and Tumaco.
