In this paper the place of set theory in the history of pre-university math teaching is examined, since the epoch of ``"New Math" reforms to the present day. The basic concepts about sets are exposed, as well as the minimum language that a student should know in order to pursue university studies in STEM careers and to participate in mathematical competitions.
