Building Independent Technical Reading Skills in English as Foreign Language Students

ResumoA interpretação de textos técnicos é uma habilidade vital no local de trabalho e um componente-chave dos cursos de Inglês para Fins Específicos (ESP). Este estudo de pesquisa-ação explora a capacidade de falantes não nativos de inglês de interpretar textos técnicos com e sem auxílios tecnológicos, como dicionários online e tradutores. O estudo envolveu 44 estudantes de primeiro ano de Inglês como Língua Estrangeira (EFL) matriculados em um programa de Técnico Industrial em um instituto de ensino superior chileno. Durante uma intervenção de oito sessões, as habilidades de leitura dinâmica e varredura dos estudantes foram desenvolvidas através de atividades de construção de vocabulário e análise de vídeos. Os dados foram coletados através de pré-testes e pós-testes de leitura, e entrevistas semiestruturadas. Estatísticas descritivas, testes de postos sinalizados de Wilcoxon e análise temática foram utilizados para interpretação dos dados. Os resultados indicaram que 72,7% dos participantes (32 de 44) interpretaram com sucesso textos técnicos de forma independente no pós-teste sem assistência tecnológica. Apesar da transição desafiadora da leitura apoiada por tecnologia para a leitura autônoma, a maioria dos participantes demonstrou habilidades de compreensão suficientes para extrair informações gerais e específicas de manuais autênticos de maquinário. Os achados sugerem que a instrução focada em estratégias de leitura pode efetivamente preencher a lacuna entre a compreensão de leitura técnica dependente de tecnologia e independente em aprendizes iniciantes de EFL.
